Paper, bamboo ribs and light give Isamu Noguchi's Akari lamps a presence that feels larger than their delicate construction.

Light sculptures from Gifu

Noguchi began the Akari series in 1951 after visiting Gifu in Japan. The designs bring local lantern-making together with his sculptural practice, across table, floor and pendant forms.

A visible, glowing skin

Paper diffuses the light while the ribs remain legible as fine lines. In daylight the outline and surface take the lead; after dark the volume glows. The chosen bulb also affects the warmth of the light.

Make a gentle pool of light

Timber, linen and plaster complement the fine surface. Keep the delicate shade away from narrow circulation routes and damp areas. A more focused light may be useful alongside it for reading.
