A marble block and sweeping metal arc bring overhead light to the table without a ceiling-mounted pendant.

Light supported from the floor

Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed Arco for Flos in 1962. The long arm carries the shade from a base beside the seating or dining area to the surface that needs light.

The base does real work

The marble block acts as a counterweight to the projecting arm. Its mass contrasts with the slim stainless-steel curve, while the shade directs light downwards.

Plan both ends of the arc

Mark the position of the base and the point where the shade should sit. Check the route between them against room height and walking space, and consider the cable.

Connect its materials

Pale stone works alongside wood or plaster. A small metal detail elsewhere can echo the arc. The lamp needs enough room for its structure to make sense in the layout.
