A chair for the SAS Royal Hotel

Jacobsen designed the Egg in 1958 for Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel. Its high back and side wings give the sitter a degree of separation without enclosing the whole room.

The shell shapes the chair

A padded shell joins back and arms in one flowing outline. The slender base visually lifts the large body. Leaving space behind it lets the curved back contribute to the interior.

Choose the covering in context

Cognac leather adds a warm tone alongside timber. Pale fabric softens the volume, while stronger colour makes it prominent. Compare samples in your room's light and try the enclosed sitting position.

Build a reading spot

Start with a small table, reading light and room to swivel. A rug can link the chair with the sofa. It does not need a complete period interior to feel at home.
