A chair for the Barcelona Pavilion
The Barcelona Chair was created in 1929 for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exposition, within the collaborative design work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich.
A frame around upholstered planes
Curved metal bands support broad seat and back cushions. Stitching and buttons divide the leather surfaces, while the open frame leaves space visible below. The crossing bands are particularly clear from the side.
Combine contrasting textures
Black leather and polished metal create a sharp contrast. Timber, a wool rug or pale curtains add softer surfaces. Leave some space at the sides and choose a table that does not hide the frame.
